Staph stoppers

University of Iowa researchers have developed a new vaccine that protects against lethal pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria, including drug-resistant strains like MRSA. The new vaccine, tested in animal models, works by targeting the toxins secreted by staph bacteria. Results appear in the Journal of Infectious Disease.

The University of Iowa elementary education major is graduating this December and plans to become a teacher to help other students succeed.

Writing new roles, righting old wrongs

There are far more women than men in theater audiences and theater degree programs. Yet men's roles outnumber women's by half, and men write most of the plays that get produced. The UI is collaborating with other Big Ten schools on a program that will support female playwrights and provide female actors with strong roles.
