The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free concert by the UI Symphony Band and the Iowa Honor Band at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.
The performance will feature conductor Richard Mark Heidel, director of bands in the School of Music; Kenneth Tse, School of Music faculty member, on alto saxophone; and guest conductor Stanley Michalski Jr., professor emeritus of music and conductor of bands at Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
The program for the Symphony Band is as follows:
- Canzona by Peter Mennin (Stanley Michalski, guest conductor)
- Only Light by Aaron Perrine (world premiere)
- Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble by Frank Ticheli (Kenneth Tse, soloist)
- Huldingungsmarsch by Richard Wagner (ed. Alfred Reed)
The Iowa Honor Band features the state’s top high school musicians. The UI School of Music hosts the Iowa Honor Band Festival, which includes rehearsals, a director’s clinic, and master classes with UI faculty, culminating with the concert.
The Iowa Honor Band performance will be conducted by Michalski, and will feature:
- Exhilaration by Fred J. Allen
- Greek Folk Song Suite by Franco Cesarini
- Near Woodstock Town by Percy Aldridge Grainger (arr. Ray Cramer)
- Apollo–Myth and Legend by Rob Romeyn
- Imperial March by Karl King (arr. Gene Milford)
The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
