A group of 20 University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty members will be honored for their work as scientists, scholars, and educators at the fourth annual Celebration of Excellence in Research, Scholarship, Teaching, and Service.

Two years after receiving the award, Mary Charlton and Melissa Febos say they feel the university’s support of their work.

The prestigious honor recognizes faculty nationally and internationally renowned for their scholarship, teaching, and service.

Four University of Iowa faculty members are recipients of the 2024 President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence, recognizing their exceptional and ongoing contributions to student learning and success.

Stephanie Gantz, assistant professor in the Carver College of Medicine, has been named a 2024 Sloan Research Fellow for her work studying the brain.

Christopher Coffey, professor in the College of Public Health, and Cristina Tilley, professor in the UI College of Law, will present this year’s lecture, “Pathways to Discovery: Clinical and Legal Trials, Academic Rigor, and Public Perceptions.”

When Tara Bynum, University of Iowa assistant professor of English and African American Studies, published her first book, Reading Pleasures: Everyday Black Living in Early America, she was able to share her words with an even larger audience than she could have imagined: She was interviewed by PBS in February and was featured on an April episode of The Takeaway podcast, hosted by Melissa Harris-Perry.

The University of Iowa 24/7 Support and Crisis Line is now available to faculty, staff, and postdocs as part of the university’s ongoing effort to prioritize the mental health and well-being of employees. The 24-hour crisis line has been available to students since fall 2021.

Christopher Coffey, director of the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center and professor of biostatistics in the University of Iowa College of Public Health, and Cristina Tilley, Claire Ferguson-Carlson Faculty Fellow in Law and professor in the UI College of Law, will deliver the UI’s 41st Presidential Lecture.

On Dec. 14–17, nearly 1,700 University of Iowa students will receive their degrees during in-person and livestreamed commencement ceremonies, beginning with the College of Education’s undergraduate and Teacher Education Program recognition Dec. 14 and concluding with the College of Engineering undergraduate ceremony Dec. 17.
