About 150 Iowa students attended the 2014 Iowa Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium hosted Thursday and today by the UI College of Education’s Belin-Blank Center; 15 of the students presented original research, and nine UI colleges, departments, or facilities gave lab tours.

Laura Corley Lavine, associate professor of entomology at Washington State University, will present a lecture on the evolution of sexually selected traits in beetles at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, in 70 Van Allen Hall on the UI campus.

The public is invited to a free lecture by prominent media activist Robert McChesney as he discusses the role media play in democratic societies on Monday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. in W128 Chemistry Building on the University of Iowa campus.

Poet Brenda Hillman, alumna of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will present a free reading at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House.

The University of Iowa will sponsor "Lessons in Drag" on Sunday, March 2, a performance that raises issues of gender and explores South Asian popular culture. The performance will be followed by a next-day panel discussion on March 3, exploring India's penal code that has widely been understood to criminalize homosexuality.

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts will produce "Absurd Person Singular," a ferociously funny play by the master of British comedy, Alan Ayckbourn, as its next Mainstage production. The production will open March 6 in the David Thayer Theatre of the UI Theatre Building, 200 N. Riverside Drive.

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a guest artist recital by Dylan Thomas Chmura-Moore, assistant professor of music at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by the UI Chamber Orchestra at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

Richard Epstein, professor of law at New York University and author of the Hoover Institution’s The Libertarian blog, will discuss social welfare when he speaks at the University of Iowa College of Law on Thursday, March 6.
