The 11th annual Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival takes place April 11-13. The festival presents different forms of film and video that explore the boundaries of documentary and nonfiction filmmaking from around the world.

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free recital by Volkan Orhon, UI associate professor of double bass, and pianist Rose Chancler at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus. The program will include works by Nicholas Walker, David Anderson, Giovanni Bottesini, Gaspor Cassado, and César Franck.

Debra Spark, alumna of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will read from her work at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. Spark also will give a lecture called “That’s Funny” at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 18, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House.

Fiction writer Madeline McDonnell and poet Caryl Pagel, both graduates of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will read from their work at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. The reading also will be streamed live on the University of Iowa Writing University website.

University of Iowa students, staff, alumni, and faculty gathered for a brunch at the UI Asian Pacific American Culture Center on Sunday, one of many activities marking the 10th anniversary of the center during a three-day celebration.

The University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum will host a free public showing of the film “Love & Valor, The Intimate Civil War Letters,” followed by a director’s talk Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m., in the Senate Chamber.

Directing a theater production is a bit of a balancing act. Kristin Clippard has walked this tightrope many times, and loves every minute of it. She will direct "She Stoops to Conquer," the final production of the 2012-2013 University Theatres Mainstage season; the show opens April 19 in E.C. Mabie Theatre.

The University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum will host a debate with the Little Hawk Speech and Debate team from Iowa City High School on Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum is welcoming Herky and his buddies for the 2013 Herky Graduation Tour. The temporary exhibit will be at Old Capitol this April through August.

Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor of Philosophy, Sanford Goldberg, will deliver a public lecture titled “Thinking for Oneself: Testimony, Epistemic Dependence, and the Aims of Education” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in Room 107 in the English-Philosophy Building.
