The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free concert by the University Band and Concert Band at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Iowa Memorial Union Ballroom.

Writers’ Workshop alumna and former UI instructor Joy Williams will present a free reading at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House.

Graduate directors in the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts will present their debut directing work over the course of two weekends, Dec. 5-7 and 12-14, in Theatre B of the UI Theatre Building. Admission is $5 (free for UI students with valid UI ID).

The performing arts component of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Project Art will present a performance by the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band at noon Friday, Dec. 13, in the atrium of the John Colloton Pavilion at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The performance is free and open to the public.

In recognition of GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week, the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History will host a special geographic information systems (GIS) discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, as part of its UI Explorers Seminar Series.

Members of the media are invited to attend the 17th Annual University of Iowa International Day for Human Rights Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville. Hundreds of middle school students will participate in the conference with the theme "The Human Right to an Adequate Standard of Living."

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by the Bad Boyz of Double Bass, featuring Volkan Orhon, UI associate professor of double bass, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

Hawkeyes flocked to the nation’s capital this week to take part in the second Hawkeye Caucus in Washington, D.C. The event, held Wednesday, Nov. 13, gave University of Iowa President Sally Mason, deans, student leaders, and even Herky a chance to meet with congressional representatives and alumni and showcase the best the UI has to offer Iowa and the nation.

UI International Programs' annual photo contest gives the public an opportunity to vicariously relive the adventures of returned study abroad students through compelling images, as well as see the familiar landscapes and scenes of Iowa through the unique perspective of international students. The University of Iowa Symphony Band, under the direction of faculty member Richard Mark Heidel, will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

As part of America Recycles Day, University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students will don gloves, goggles, and protective suits to sort through piles of trash from three campus buildings to see how much can be recycled or otherwise diverted from the landfill.
