Fill your mind, not just your belly during the University of Iowa Food for Thought Theme Semester, coming in spring 2015 with “appetizers” going on now.

Arts Share, the University of Iowa program that provides life-enriching arts experiences, had its busiest year ever during the 2013-14 academic year, with more than 300 events in 36 Iowa cities and towns.

Members of the media are invited to tour an active construction site Tuesday, Sept. 30, to learn how the University of Iowa and industry partner during this busy building season to protect themselves and the community.

Waswo X. Waswo will lecture Thursday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in room 240 of Art Building West on the University of Iowa campus. His talk, “Indian Printmaking: Rediscovery, Revolution and Renewal,” tells the story of his journey into collecting Indian prints and summarizes the history of fine art printmaking in India.

Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art First Friday reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 3, at FilmScene on College Street in the pedestrian mall in downtown Iowa City.

Iowa native and UI graduate Dr. Shirley M. Mueller will talk about 17th and 18th century Chinese teapots in her lecture, “Dutch Tea Time and Beyond,” on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Art Building West on the University of Iowa campus.

Archaeologists are restarting a dig in Hubbard, where an 1851 flood created a soil time capsule, preserving rare artifacts from life in early 19th century Iowa City. Staff and students from the UI Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences are helping with this activity.

The University of Iowa has several programs, including International Buddies at Tippie and Friends Without Borders, that promote bridging the cultural and academic gap for international students while also capitalizing on the global perspective they bring to campus.

The University of Iowa College of Education will celebrate its new cutting-edge classroom with a grand opening Sept. 26. The room was renovated with new technology and is expected to change the way students learn and teachers teach.

Six-time Grammy-winning jazz vocalist and UI graduate Al Jarreau returns to his alma mater for a public discussion Thursday, Sept. 18, in advance of his Sept. 19 performance at the Iowa Soul Festival. The UI College of Public Health has named William H. Foege the recipient of its 2014 Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award and Distinguished Lectureship. Foege is a global health luminary who helped conceive and lead the worldwide campaign to eradicate smallpox. He will visit campus on Oct. 1 and 2.

The University of Iowa’s Hancher will co-present Hoba Hoba Spirit with Legion Arts at 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26, at CSPS Hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Hoba Hoba Spirit blends influences, rhythms, and languages to create music with wide appeal.
