'Bio patch' restores bone tissue at damaged, weakened sites

Bone regeneration may no longer be limited to science fiction, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Iowa have created a so-called bio patch that allows localized regeneration of bone tissue within the body.

The University of Iowa will host scholar and lecturer Alexandre Dauge-Roth Monday, Nov. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in 315 Phillips Hall. Dauge-Roth will use documentary films to explore the voices of survivors and other topics related to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

Researchers at the University of Iowa have created an implantable bio patch that regrows bone in a living body, using existing cells. The team created a scaffold seeded with plasmids containing the genetic information for producing bone. The plasmids are absorbed by bone cells already in the body, spurring new growth.
