Faculty—
Ibrahim Ozbolat, assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering and co-director of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Group at the University of Iowa Center for Computer-Aided Design, is the recipient of the 2014 SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award.
The award honors innovators, age 35 and younger, in both academia and industry for exceptional accomplishments, such as technical publications, patents, or technical-professional leadership.
Ozbolat is leading the UI's Biomanufacturing Laboratory, specializing in bio-printing for organ fabrication, and the Electronic Manufacturing Team, and supervising the Design for Manufacturing Laboratory. He has been engaged in several projects sponsored by governmental agencies and private corporations in applications ranging from design and manufacturing to clinical medicine and energy.
The National Eye Health Education Program announces that its Living with Low Vision video has won a 2013 Communicator Award of Distinction and a Hermes Creative Award Honorable Mention, two international awards that recognize excellence in marketing and communications.
Mark Wilkinson, professor and director of the Vision Rehabilitation Service and Randy Verdick, Department of Ophthalmology videographer, contributed content and patient stories featured in the video.
Villia M. Tarvydas, professor in the College of Education, was recently awarded a Certificate of Appreciation, American Counseling Association and American Association of State Counseling Boards, National. Membership of Oversight Committee for the 20/20 Initiative: A Vision for the Future of Counseling.
Renita R. Schmidt, associate professor in the College of Education, has been awarded a Distinguished Mentor Award, from the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates at the UI.
The award was given for outstanding dedication to undergraduate research mentoring at the university.
Leslie L. Schrier, associate professor in the College of Education, was recently named chair of the Teacher Education Section, of the Iowa Department of Education.
Schrier will write, review, and promote a legislative agenda pertaining to the education of English Language Learners in Iowa's K-12 schools.
Schrier also received the following appointments:
- Editor of Foreign Language Annals, American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, International. The appointment is a second three-year term as editor of the research journal of the foreign language teaching and learning profession.
- Chair of Committee of Awards, Modern Language Association, International. The committee selects the international and national book awards for scholarships in languages and literatures in both English and foreign languages.
Alumna—
Dr. Jonathan Shenkin (Pediatric Dentistry Certificate, 2003) has been elected second vice president of the American Dental Association.
University—
UI Facilities Management Landscape Services was recently recognized by the Professional Grounds Management Society with a Merit Award in the 2013 Green Star Awards competition during the society’s awards dinner on Oct. 25 at the School of Grounds Management & GIE+EXPO in Louisville, Ky.
The award was given in the university/college category for exceptional grounds maintenance.
The Green Star Awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence, complimenting other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction.

Tarrell Awe Agahe Portman, associate professor in the Department of Counselor Education and Supervision in the College of Education, will deliver the keynote address at the Jeonbuk Counseling Association Conference at Won Kwang University on Nov. 21. The title of the lecture is, "Multicultural Supervision: An Integrated Developmental Model."

Zach Goettsche (second-year dentistry) presented "In Vitro Assessment of Three Dentifrices Containing Flouride in Preventing Demineralization of Overdenture Abutments and Root Surfaces," at the 19th Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis, Tenn. Oct. 25-27.
