Lois J. Geist has been named the new associate provost for faculty in the University of Iowa’s Office of the Provost. Geist previously served as associate dean of faculty affairs and development in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and professor of internal medicine.

The university is leaving the decision to cancel class on the night of the Iowa presidential caucuses to individual faculty members, who are in the best position to determine whether canceling class or excusing a student’s absence will have a negative impact on student learning.

The University of Iowa search committee for the new dean of the College of Engineering has selected four final candidates. The candidates will visit campus from Oct. 29 to Nov. 12 to participate in public forums and meet with faculty, staff, and college leadership.

Next fall, the University of Iowa Office of the Provost will transition outreach and engagement programming to the colleges and departments. The decision follows a review of the Office of Outreach and Engagement last spring to gather information about current programming and determine the best way to encourage broader engagement.
