The University of Iowa College of Engineering’s Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL), in collaboration with Rockwell Collins, recently completed successful testing of a commercial avionics system that may one day lead to safe, unmanned flight over U.S. skies.

Grant Brown, a student from Clive, Iowa, who is seeking his doctoral degree in biostatistics from the UI College of Public Health, is working with faculty member Jacob Oleson to develop open source software that will model and predict the spread of the Ebola epidemic.

Kid Captain Matthew McCarthy of Marion, Iowa, had a cold, and the virus from the cold activated his immune system, which mistakenly attacked the myelin in his spinal cord, resulting in messages not being carried to and from the brain properly. McCarthy receives all of his primary care at UI Children’s Hospital.

UI arborist Andy Dahl cares for more than 8,000 trees with his four-person crew. The collection includes more than 250 species—with seven state champion trees on site. Last month, Dahl was honored as a True Professional of Arboriculture by the International Society of Arboriculture.

After a successful summer engaging poets near and far, the University of Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) will launch its second Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), How Writers Write Fiction, on Friday, Sept. 26. The course, taught entirely on the Internet, is designed to reach an unlimited number of participants.
