"We Are Phil" is the UI’s faculty and staff giving program that highlights the transformative power of philanthropy—“Phil”—at Iowa and asks faculty and staff to consider making annual financial contributions to support any area of the UI.

Want whiter teeth? Fruit mixture is not the answer

It may seem like an all-natural way to whiten teeth, but a University of Iowa study shows that a strawberry and baking soda mixture does little beyond cleaning those choppers. The main reason: Strawberries, and other popular natural tooth whiteners such as lemons and apples, lack the chemicals known to cause deeper, longer lasting teeth whitening. Results appear in the journal Operative Dentistry.

Nick Yablon, associate professor of American studies at the UI, gave a brief history of the time capsule as a tradition, calling it a fairly recent development that set off a "craze for sending things across time."

A century-old time capsule, filled mostly with documents by long-gone Wall Street businessmen celebrating New York as a commercial hub, was unsealed on Wednesday. UI American studies faculty member Nick Yablon had the honor of retrieving items from their container.
