This summer, the University of Iowa will break ground on the first new residence hall to be built on campus since 1968. In addition to housing for 501 students, it will include a multi-purpose room with a performance space, a sports grill operated by University Dining, and tutoring and group study areas.

University of Iowa professors and students took to the roof of Van Allen Hall Tuesday evening, June 5, to set up five telescopes built exclusively for observing the sun for a public viewing of Venus's transit across the sun. An overcast sky prevented all but a few brief glimpses of the rare astronomical event.

The University of Iowa Gardeners have started a new herb and flower garden by North Hall to grow things like borage (an edible flower), chamomile, sunflowers, and more. They spent a sunny Friday morning laying mulch and planting in the black Iowa dirt.

A new alcohol education program, eCheckup To Go, will survey UI students on their alcohol and tobacco habits, use that data to create an instant customized profile that includes alcohol use patterns, and break down the data into tangible financial and physical costs—like the cheeseburger caloric equivalent of their alcohol consumption.
