An initiative to help Iowans maintain their hearing health is being launched at Fry Fest, right before the start of a new and exciting—and likely noisy—football season. HawkEars is the brainchild of UI audiology graduate student Kevin Kock.

Kid Captain, a partnership that began in 2009 between the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes to honor pediatric patients and celebrate their inspirational stories, has announced its honorees for the 2017 season.

Baseball-Reference.com, the definitive online guide for baseball statistics, started out as a project that CEO Sean Forman worked on in his spare time while finishing his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Iowa. Tolerated by his non-baseball-fan advisor, the site is now Forman’s fulltime job.

Blake Hickman took advantage of a lengthy absence from baseball by going back to school. Hickman graduated from the University of Iowa on Saturday with a degree in sports studies, almost two years after he left the school to sign a professional baseball contract with the White Sox.
