Retired developer and University of Iowa alumnus C. Allan Poots, who built more than 650 houses and multiplexes in the Iowa City area, says he got just what he needed from two engineering faculty members more than 50 years ago: a shot of confidence. Now he is paying them back.

Leaders of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Organ Transplant Center announced Monday, April 13, that the program has performed its 5,000th solid organ transplant.

Individuals who have received organ transplants at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will perform a transplant of a different kind on Earth Day, April 22.
