Through dozens of student and teacher interviews over the summer, Iowa City's Working Group Theatre developed the plot for a new Hancher-commissioned play on bullying, which will debut in local junior highs this month, with the goal of answering one question: Can we make bullying not cool?

The University of Iowa is flipping the traditionally somber tone of Veterans Day on its head and returning to its original upbeat, celebratory feel with a Hawaiian celebration. Veteran Vitality 2013 will be Monday, Nov. 11, and includes a 6,000-flag display, a kickoff celebration, a series of panels, and a luau.

Jeff Weld, who earned three degrees from the University of Iowa, was named recipient of the 2013 Yager Educational Accomplishment Honor, presented annually to the College of Education graduate who has demonstrated significant accomplishment or innovation in the K-12 setting. The award presentation will take place Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Before Mason Shepherd was born, his mother, Cindy, went in for her 20-week ultrasound where doctors discovered that her son had stopped growing. The Shepherds were transferred to UI Children’s Hospital for genetic testing, and Mason was diagnosed with Russell-Silver syndrome, a disorder characterized by slow growth before and after birth.
