Faith LeMaster has a smile that lights up a room. Despite the many health challenges she has endured throughout her life, this 10-year-old has never let tough times dim that smile.

A University of Iowa study finds teenagers are far more sensitive than adults to the immediate effect or reward of their behaviors. Even when a behavior is no longer in a teenager’s best interest to continue, they will because the effect of the reward is still there and lasts much longer in adolescents than in adults.

University of Iowa infectious disease specialist discusses a decrease in the number of children developing infections related to their care while in the hospital over the last seven years, citing a cultural shift and good research as having the biggest influence.

Although some Iowa hospitals have confirmed cases of EV-D68, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics reports no confirmed cases of EV-D68, said Eli Perencevich, professor of medicine at the UI Carver College of Medicine. But doctors have submitted several specimens to be tested. Actual care and management of the virus are very standard and are part of our protocol, he said.

A coating material that contains silver nanoparticles appears to reduce the number of germs that survive on surfaces, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The findings suggest that the coating may be potentially useful for preventing infections in hospital settings.

Joseph Burken of DeWitt, Iowa, was diagnosed with an astrocytoma, a cancerous tumor in the center of his brain. He also had hydrocephalus—a buildup of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain swelling. Burken will be the Kid Captain Saturday when the Hawkeyes face Ball State in Kinnick.
