In recognition of GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week, the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History will host a special geographic information systems (GIS) discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, as part of its UI Explorers Seminar Series.

The University of Iowa CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) research group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy recently originated and completed an analysis which led to the discovery of a new and unexpected particle in proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector.

Kirk and Mary Ferentz have made a gift commitment of $500,000 to support the Iowa Football Legacy Campaign. To date, more than $34 million has been raised for the campaign, which has a fundraising goal of $35 million.

On Nov. 13, the University of Iowa Housing and Dining received a report from a student that on Oct. 18, she was assaulted in a vehicle in a university parking lot by a male with the intent to commit sexual assault.

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by the Bad Boyz of Double Bass, featuring Volkan Orhon, UI associate professor of double bass, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

In remembrance of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and others associated with the university who lost their lives in combat, the Memorial Honor Roll was dedicated at the Iowa Memorial Union in 1956. Today, the honor roll occupies not only a prominent place in the Hubbard Commons; it also has a new home online.

Hawkeyes flocked to the nation’s capital this week to take part in the second Hawkeye Caucus in Washington, D.C. The event, held Wednesday, Nov. 13, gave University of Iowa President Sally Mason, deans, student leaders, and even Herky a chance to meet with congressional representatives and alumni and showcase the best the UI has to offer Iowa and the nation.

If so, you're invited to join the University of Iowa Rhetoric Writing Center staff for Midnight Madness walk-in tutoring on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 8 p.m. to midnight in 110 English-Philosophy Building. Experienced tutors and teachers will be on hand to assist with personal statements, scholarship essays, proposals, creative writing, and more.

Marshalltown’s Orpheum Theater Center is rolling out the red carpet and warming up a searchlight for the world premiere of "Movie Star: The Secret Lives of Jean Seberg," a new documentary by Emmy-nominated filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle of Fourth Wall Films, and Garry McGee of McMarr, Ltd.

Applications for the John and Elsie Mae Ferentz Undergraduate Fellowships for Research, created by Kirk and Mary Ferentz in honor of Kirk's parents, are due Dec. 2. The Ferentz Fellowships will support College of Liberal Arts and Sciences undergraduate students engaged in faculty-mentored research projects in Spring 2014.
