University of Iowa researchers have documented for the first time how melanoma cells form tumors. The team reports the process is similar to that of breast cancer cells, and they have successfully screened for two antibodies that stopped tumor formation in both cancers. Baseball-Reference.com, the definitive online guide for baseball statistics, started out as a project that CEO Sean Forman worked on in his spare time while finishing his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Iowa. Tolerated by his non-baseball-fan advisor, the site is now Forman’s fulltime job.

University of Iowa researchers have found that by stimulating the cerebellum of rats with schizophrenia-like cognitive problems, they can normalize brain activity in the frontal cortex and correct the rats’ ability to estimate the passage of time. Difficulty accurately measuring time is common issue experienced by people with schizophrenia.

The Big Ideas program, a suite of interdisciplinary classes taught by multiple UI faculty members, allows students to explore broad topics, like the origin of life and the history and science of oil, from multiple perspectives. The coursework also satisfies a General Education requirement.

This year, 200 Hawkeyes used their spring break to volunteer in 12 communities across the U.S., packing medical supplies in Atlanta, helping at a community garden in Denver, making breakfasts at an HIV/AIDS service organization in Dallas, and assisting at a Milwaukee homeless shelter. The UI College of Dentistry’s Geriatric and Special Needs Certificate Program trains dental students to attend to the unique needs of elderly patients. The college has also partnered with the College of Nursing to improve care for seniors by adding a social worker and nurse practitioner to its geriatric team.
