The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, honored six University of Iowa faculty members for their exceptional contributions and sustained record of excellence. Each recipient received $1,000 and will be honored at a special awards celebration.

Biologists led by the University of Iowa have found that asexuality in organisms may lead to rapid and large-scale structural changes in the offspring's genomes. The finding comes from an analysis of snail species that can reproduce both sexually and asexually.

Loren Glass, professor and chair of the university's Department of English, has teamed up with doctoral candidate Nicholas M. Kelly and digital humanities librarian Nichole White to create the Program Era Project, which tracks the aesthetic and cultural influence of the Iowa Writers' Workshop since its founding in 1936.

Four University of Iowa faculty members will receive the 2020 President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence in recognition of their years of outstanding teaching: Elizabeth Oakes, Lisa Segre, Mary Noonan, Madeline Shea.

Daniel L. Clay, dean of the University of Iowa College of Education, will visit campus on April 22—23 to meet with faculty, staff, and students.

Steve Tammes, a senior at the University of Iowa, says his love of physics and decision to pursue physics research stems from his uncle's stories about working at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. “(My uncle) inspired science in me,” Tammes says, “so I’m inspired to do science for him.”

Wendy F. Hensel, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, will visit campus on April 19—20 to meet with faculty, staff, and students.

The Tippie College of Business has been honored as one of the top colleges in the world for preparing students for careers in business analytics. The college received the UPS George D. Smith Prize, which recognizes the leading university in the world for excellence in preparing students to practice in the areas of analytics or operations research.

Larry Lockwood, assistant provost and university registrar, will retire on July 6 after 19 years at the University of Iowa.

Tracie Morris, professor of poetry at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, has received a Guggenheim fellowship to write a book and craft a play about influential actor and playwright Ira Aldridge. The fellowship provides six to 12 months’ funding for artists, scholars, and writers to pursue creative project
