About 1,500 University of Iowa students received their degrees at fall 2016 commencement ceremonies Dec. 16–18. “Iowa Now” captured several celebratory moments at the festivities.

Built from the ground up out of a collective “dream,” today the University of Iowa LGBTQ clinic serves thousands of patients from all over the Midwest and has been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as “a leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality.”

The University of Iowa’s new Visual Arts Building was named “Best in the Midwest” for 2016. Winners were selected based on evidence of innovation, creative use of new technology, sustainability, strength of presentation, and great design. The building, which opened in August, was designed by Steven Holl Architects.

Cheng Cheng-kung was presented with the Outstanding University of Iowa Alumni Award during a ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan. UI College of Engineering Dean Alec B. Scranton presented the award. Cheng is a distinguished professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Orthopedic Device Research Center at National Yang Ming University.

University of Iowa Professor of Anthropology Russell Ciochon and colleagues from Australia and China have received a crucial grant to study Gigantopithecus blacki, the biggest primate ever to have lived.
