A first-year seminar at the University of Iowa allows dance students to participate in creative research, perform at the college level, work closely with a world-renowned faculty member, and build community.

DoVeanna S. Fulton, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and professor of African American and women’s studies at the University of Houston–Downtown, is the fourth finalist for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences dean. She will visit campus Oct. 25 and 26.

Steve Goddard, senior associate to the executive vice chancellor and John E. Olsson Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, is the third finalist for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences dean position. He will visit campus Oct. 23 and 24.

Susan S. Williams, professor in the Department of English at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, is the second finalist for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences dean position. She will visit campus Thursday and Friday, Oct. 18 and 19.

Sacha E. Kopp, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, is the first finalist for the position of dean of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He will visit campus Oct. 15 and 16.

Edward Wasserman, Stuit Professor of Experimental Psychology in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Iowa, has been honored by the Pavlovian Society.

The University of Iowa search committee for the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) has selected four final candidates. The candidates will visit campus over the next two weeks to participate in public forums and meet with faculty, staff, and leadership at CLAS.

The University of Iowa is seeking to become the nation’s next HEARTSafe Campus. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to take CPR training, including instruction on using Automatic External Defibrillators. President J. Bruce Harreld has set a goal of qualifying for designation during the spring 2019 semester.

The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies will host two grants totaling nearly $1.6 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation: one for a 2019–20 Mellon Sawyer Seminar titled “Imagining Latinidades: Articulations of National Belonging,” and a four-year grant for “Humanities for the Public Good: An Integrative, Collaborative, Practice-Based Humanities PhD.”

Yannick Meurice, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been awarded a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, to study the foundational aspects of quantum computing in theoretical high-energy physics.
