University of Iowa students, faculty, staff, and alumni received some of the institution’s highest honors on April 20 at the 104th Finkbine Dinner.

The American Academy of Arts and Letters has honored five University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduates and a former visiting faculty member with its 2021 awards in literature, while another workshop alumna was elected to membership in the elite group.

Four University of Iowa faculty members will receive the 2020 President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence in recognition of their years of outstanding teaching: Elizabeth Oakes, Lisa Segre, Mary Noonan, Madeline Shea.

Steve Tammes, a senior at the University of Iowa, says his love of physics and decision to pursue physics research stems from his uncle's stories about working at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. “(My uncle) inspired science in me,” Tammes says, “so I’m inspired to do science for him.”

Guowei Qi, a fourth-year student from West Des Moines, Iowa, has been named one of 17 Churchill scholars in the nation.
