Ted Abel, professor and chair of the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute at the UI, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

Three University of Iowa scientists in the Iowa Neuroscience Institute (INI) have received NARSAD Young Investigator grants from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation for projects focused on addiction, depression, and brain imaging. The two-year, $70,000 grants help promising young scientists launch careers in neuroscience and psychiatry.

University of Iowa graduate students Ana-Monica Racila and Serena Gumusoglu have been awarded funding to pursue academic work and lead innovative community projects that empower women and girls. The awards are from the American Association of University Women.

The Summer Health Professions Education Program celebrates 30 years of preparing students who are underrepresented in the health professions for careers in health and medicine. The program has introduced nearly 30,000 first- and second-year college students, including those at the UI, to careers in medicine, dentistry, and other health professions.

The University of Iowa Libraries has awarded 15 grants for Open Educational Resource (OER) projects for the 2019-2020 academic year. OpenHawks is a campus-wide grant program that funds faculty efforts to replace current textbooks with OERs for enhanced student success.
