Marian Clark to read from memoir Feb. 15

Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduate Marian Clark will read from her memoir, "Sixty-Something and Flying Solo: A Retiree Sorts it Out in Iowa," at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. The reading also will be streamed live on the University of Iowa Writing University website.

The University of Iowa Department of History will hold a memorial service at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, for visiting assistant professor Jacob Dean Hall, 39, who died Jan. 29 at his home in Iowa City.

Heather A. Slomski and Kathleen Founds received the 2014 Iowa Short Fiction Awards, announced by the University of Iowa Press. Slomski won the 2014 Iowa Short Fiction Award for her collection "The Lovers Set Down Their Spoons." Founds received the 2014 John Simmons Short Fiction Award for "When Mystical Creatures Attack!"

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded $3 million to the University of Iowa and 14 partner institutions to fund an innovative two-year project, "Humanities Without Walls." Faculty members who wish to take part in the collaborative are invited to apply for Obermann seed grants.
