Thousands of first-year students moved into residence halls across the UI campus on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 17 and 18. About 3,000 students were expected to arrive each day, with move-ins scheduled in shifts and assisted by volunteers from the UI community.

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UI receives highest designation from NCI

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI has received its third renewal as a comprehensive cancer center from the National Cancer Institute. The five-year renewal includes $12.2 million to support research. There are fewer than 50 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. Holden is the only one in Iowa.

New students gain an edge at Iowa

The Iowa Edge program offers extra support to students who come from underrepresented backgrounds, as well as to those who are the first in their family to attend college. The program's purpose is to ease students' concerns and ensure that participants successfully transition into college life at the UI.

Pharmacy grads reap residency benefits

Ninety percent of graduates from the UI College of Pharmacy landed the residencies they wanted in 2016. That's well above the national average of 68 percent, according to the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. Completing these competitive residencies will improve the graduates' chances of securing the jobs they want.

UI to expand NITE RIDE service

The UI’s late-night transportation service is now open to people of all genders and powered by a smartphone application. The app will enable users to pinpoint their location within the NITE RIDE boundary map and request a ride to and from any location within those boundaries.

High school students spent eight weeks this summer in the ISE Coding Garage, developing apps as part of a STEM initiative developed by Coralville-based Innovative Software Engineering (ISE) and supported by the University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development.

Two decades of volunteer dentistry

For more than 20 years, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the UI College of Dentistry has partnered with the nonprofit organization Proteus Inc. to provide on-site dental services to the children of migrant farmworkers. Parents were invited to bring children ages 18 and younger for a free exam.

It’s going to be a busy few days in Iowa City as the University of Iowa welcomes thousands of first-year students moving into residence halls. Residence hall move-in will be scheduled in shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, and Thursday, Aug. 18.
