Eric Dyken, director of the UI's Sleep Disorders Program, says the body produces melatonin when it gets dark, and as melatonin levels rise, people get drowsy and eventually fall asleep. The use of alarm clocks with bright light can affect sleep patterns.

It's worth it to call police, according to a University of Iowa study. The study found victims who report crimes to police are 22% less likely to be a victim again. The only exception was for victims of burglary, who saw no decline in the risk of being re-victimized.

James Alan McPherson, professor emeritus at the Iowa Writers' Workshop who was the first black writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, died on Wednesday in Iowa City. He was 72.
