UI art professor earns prestigious award for bicycle frame building

A bicycle named ArrowHED, designed and built by UI art professor Steve McGuire, won Best Mountain Bike, Singletrack Choice Award, at Bespoked 2017, an international show for bicycle frame-builders held in Bristol, UK.

UI honors top student employee

Rachel Bruflodt was named UI’s 2016–17 student employee of the year. The Dubuque, Iowa, native and seven other student employees, as well as nine student employee supervisors, was honored April 13 at a reception at the home of UI President J. Bruce Harreld.

UI and its Landscape Services Tree Crew honored with 2016 Tree Campus USA award

The University of Iowa and its Landscape Services Tree Crew were recently honored with the 2016 Tree Campus USA award at the 27th Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon in Des Moines. The UI is one of only five Tree Campus USA award winners in Iowa. This is the eighth year in a row that the UI tree crew has received this honor.

Tippie student to become air battle manager after graduation

After graduation, UI marketing major Alex Pagano will become an air battle manager at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. Pagano, a former wing commander in the UI’s Air Force ROTC program, says her Tippie College of Business mentors also played a key role in her success.

Nine UI students were also honored at the event.

Baseball statistics website Baseball-Reference.com born at UI

Baseball-Reference.com, the definitive online guide for baseball statistics, started out as a project that CEO Sean Forman worked on in his spare time while finishing his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Iowa. Tolerated by his non-baseball-fan advisor, the site is now Forman’s fulltime job.

Hauer earns NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Jill Hauer, a doctoral student in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Genetics at the University of Iowa, earned a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship for 2017 to study a kidney disease.
