A citizen of the Navajo Nation, he also helped revitalize the annual UI Powwow, an event spotlighting Native American culture.

Sandra McGee, a Des Moines native and clinical assistant professor in the UI School of Social Work, responded to a series of fatal police shootings of black men by convening community forums that enhanced relationships between law enforcement and the African American community in Des Moines.
