Iowa City’s New Horizons Band is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The band, a joint effort between the Iowa City community and the University of Iowa College of Education, provides adults ages 55 and older the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and play in a band or ensemble.

Faced with declining enrollment and rising costs, some small liberal arts colleges have added professional and vocational majors, a decision University of Iowa researchers say has strengthened rather than undermined the mission of the schools.
