Aiden Bettine, the UI's first Humanities for the Public Good graduate assistant, is creating the Transgender Oral History Project of Iowa to collect, preserve, and celebrate the lives and stories of transgender and gender non-conforming people across Iowa and build a digital archive of transgender history.
Kirby receives Lola Lopes Award

Martha Kirby, senior academic advisor in the Department of Political Science received the 2019 Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy, which recognizes administrators, staff, or faculty outside of their teaching role who serve as strong and effective advocates for undergraduate students and the undergraduate experience.
IWP’s Merrill awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

Director of the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program Christopher Merrill was one of 168 winners of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation’s 2019 fellowships. The recipients, announced April 10, were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants.

For John and Margo Daniel, pharmacy is truly a family affair. John Daniel, '55 BSPh, opened the Daniel Pharmacy in Fort Dodge, Iowa, in 1963 with his parents. Now owned and operated by John and his wife, Margo, many of their children are involved at the pharmacy in some capacity.

Deadly scorpion venom reveals pain protein structure

An international team of scientists, including UI biophysicist Chris Ahern, used a lethal scorpion toxin to capture detailed, 3D pictures of a protein involved in pain. The toxin locks the pain protein into a “pose,” allowing researchers to see, for the first time, several unexpected interactions in how protein works.
