University of Iowa students, faculty, staff, and alumni received some of the institution’s highest honors—including Hancher-Finkbine Medallions recognizing leadership, learning, and loyalty—at the 96th annual Finkbine Dinner.

Thirty veterans gathered in Iowa City April 5-7 for a workshop entitled "Writing My Way Back Home," which is the brainchild of Emma Rainey, a 2009 graduate of the UI's Master in Fine Arts writing program.

The University of Iowa will host a reading of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum.

Three University of Iowa juniors will be recognized for their research accomplishments on Wednesday at the annual Spring Undergraduate Research Festival, held at the University Capitol Centre.

Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek has proclaimed April 13 as Bill Sackter Day. The proclamation coincides with a week of special events to mark the 100th birthday of Bill Sackter, April 8-13.

The 11th annual Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival takes place April 11-13. The festival presents different forms of film and video that explore the boundaries of documentary and nonfiction filmmaking from around the world.

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free recital by Volkan Orhon, UI associate professor of double bass, and pianist Rose Chancler at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus. The program will include works by Nicholas Walker, David Anderson, Giovanni Bottesini, Gaspor Cassado, and César Franck.

Jen Silverman, alumna of the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop, won the 2013 Yale Drama Series for Still, a play about three women who are each dealing with challenges of childbirth.

Debra Spark, alumna of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will read from her work at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. Spark also will give a lecture called “That’s Funny” at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 18, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House.

Fiction writer Madeline McDonnell and poet Caryl Pagel, both graduates of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will read from their work at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. The reading also will be streamed live on the University of Iowa Writing University website.
