The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free jazz recital by the UI Latin Jazz Ensemble at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus. The recital will feature music from composers Rafael Dos Santos (Brazilian pianist/educator and former UI jazz graduate student), Victor Mendoza, Ray Vega, and others.

Marina Warner will receive the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism in Memory of Newton Arvin in a public event at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol on the University of Iowa campus. Warner will be honored for "Stranger Magic: Charmed States and the Arabian Nights."

Five poets included in "The New Census: An Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry," the new book from Rescue Press, will read at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. The reading also will be streamed live on the University of Iowa Writing University website.

Iowa Writers' Workshop alumna Jennifer duBois was one of the 10 emerging writers conferred a 2013 Whiting Writers' Award at a ceremony in New York City on Oct. 21.

Visiting professor Andrew Stewart will give a lecture, “Individuality and Innovation in Greek Sculpture,” Monday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Art Building West on the University of Iowa campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

The University of Iowa Opera Theater will perform "Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in The Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free recital by Mark Ponzo (cornet) and JeongSoo Kim (piano) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall in downtown Iowa City.

The top bands of the University of Iowa School of Music will take center stage with the annual Band Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Band Extravaganza is a popular showcase for the Johnson County Landmark jazz band, the Symphony Band, and the Hawkeye Marching Band.

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free recital by the Tuba/Euphonium Studio at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall. The recital will feature solo and ensemble performances by tuba and euphonium students of professor John Manning.

Construction crews set to build the future UI music building stumbled upon pieces of Iowa City’s past this month when workers found several pieces of historic artifacts, which archaeologists then spent a week excavating.

A group of UI 3-D design students has been selected to exhibit their work at Structural Objects Functional Art + Design, known as SOFA, an art fair in Chicago that attracts close to 34,000 people each year.

Bruce Gantz, head of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, directs a multidisciplinary center at the University of Iowa that is driving improvements in cochlear implant technology, developing new implants for deaf children and adults, and preparing the field for advances in regenerative medicine.
