The top bands of the University of Iowa School of Music will take center stage with the annual Band Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Band Extravaganza is a popular showcase for the Johnson County Landmark (JCL) jazz band, the Symphony Band, and the Hawkeye Marching Band.

The Symphony Band, directed by School of Music professor Mark Heidel, will play "The Star Spangled Banner," arranged by Henry Fillmore; "Italian in Algiers" by Gioacchino Rossini (trans. Lucien Cailliet), "Celebrations" by John Zdechlik, and "Gallant Seventh March" by John Philip Sousa (ed. Frederick Fennell).

Under the direction of John Rapson, JCL will perform "Count 'Em" by Count Basie, "Julian" by Pepper Adams (arr. Tony Faulkner; featuring Damani Phillips as guest soloist), and "Better Get Hit in Your Soul" by Charles Mingus (arr. Sy Johnson).

The extravaganza will culminate with highlights from the 2013 marching season by the Hawkeye Marching Band, directed by Kevin Kastens. Drum Major Quentin Marquez, Golden Girl Whittney Seckar-Anderson, the Iowa Dance Team, the Iowa Cheerleaders, and Herky will all perform at this event.

Band Extravaganza admission is $5 in advance and $10 at the door ($5 for youth and UI students with valid UI ID). Tickets are available in advance from the Hancher box office in Old Capitol Town Centre, 319-335-1160, 800-426-2437, or online at The Hancher website.
