The UI will celebrate International Education Week Nov. 16–20. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education celebrates the ways international education and exchange opportunities prepare citizens for community-building.

Chosen from thousands of applicants from colleges and universities across the U.S., eight University of Iowa undergraduates were awarded the competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Kristine L. Munoz, a professor in the Departments of Spanish and Portuguese and communication studies, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to Colombia for the 2020-21 academic year. Munoz is one of more than 800 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research, or provide expertise abroad for the 2020-2021 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

Yashwant Prakash Vyas, assistant director of Diversity Resources in the University of Iowa Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, was awarded the 2020 Edward S. Blankenship Outstanding Staff Award from Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars.

The University of Iowa has been named an official Fair Trade University, a designation made upon the passing of a student-led resolution that calls for the university’s commitment to procure and sell fair trade items.

The University of Iowa has again been named a top producer of Fulbright students for 2019–20 (with a record number of 19 recipients), marking the fifth consecutive year the university achieved the elite ranking. Out of 19 awards offered to UI students, 18 have accepted and become grantees.

Cassie Barnhardt, associate professor of educational policy and leadership studies at the University of Iowa, says universities can promote democracy “because they are directly involved in the processes of teaching, learning and discovery – all of which require analysis, critique and active deliberation."

Russell Ganim, director of the Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), has been named the new associate provost and dean of International Programs. He will begin on Jan. 1.
