Recently hired University of Iowa women's rowing coach Steve Pritzker has had approximately four months to see the passion behind the Hawkeye fan base. Pritzker is hoping that the support toward anything Black and Gold carries over to his first home event this weekend: the Head of the Iowa.

It started out with a bang as the Hawkeye football team took the field amid fireworks for the 2012 season's only night game at Kinnick Stadium. Saturday, Oct. 20 also marked the Black and Gold Spirit Game, one of several official "color games" peppered throughout the season.

Mike Meyer would rather talk with his right foot. Meyer, a shy and almost reluctant junior kicker for the University of Iowa football team, made a lot of noise once again Oct. 13 during the Hawkeyes' 19-16 double-overtime victory at Michigan State.

Kathy Thomas grew up dreaming of becoming a Division I basketball player. She had chances to make that dream become reality out of high school, but never found the right fit. After a year at a junior college, Thomas is living out her dream at the University of Iowa.

Alex Karras, who played football for the University of Iowa in the 1950s, loved to perform. Famous for his success as an actor, he will also be remembered as one of the NFL's defensive stars of the 1960s. He died Wednesday of kidney failure at the age of 77.
