Our performance at work and our overall well-being go hand in hand. When we feel good, we have more energy, creativity, and focus. Research shows that employees who report high well-being (optimal health, happiness, and purpose) in their lives enjoy their work more, are more loyal to their teams, are more likely to recommend their company as a great place to work—and the list goes on.

Research also shows that behavior is contagious and our health affected by those with whom we spend time. By prioritizing our own health, we can positively influence the health of those around us, both at work and home. We all can be leaders in well-being.

Many at Iowa are making a difference in the health of their co-workers.

Sara is a business analyst in the University Benefits Office. She does “all things data” and joined the wellness ambassador network in 2018. In her first year as a wellness ambassador, Sara led walks to all nine Summer Walking Scavenger Hunt locations.

On the last walk, Sonatina Fernandes, also of University Benefits, was the only one to join. The two decided to ride their bikes to the final location.

Physical Activity? Check.
Sunshine? Check.
Smiles? Check.

This trio was instrumental in bringing a number of opportunities for workplace well-being to their colleagues. After a lunch and learn organized by the College of Public Health Staff Council focused on mindfulness and resilience, an attendee suggested doing more group activities. This led to several group walks to conquer the Summer Walking Scavenger Hunt.

“The best part was getting to be with colleagues in a new context,” says Thrams, who works in the Department of Health Management and Policy. “Often, you recognize names but not faces, so this kind of event is a great way to open up your network. The enthusiasm you build by working on it together is contagious!”

“Our walks have been triple wins: activity, collegiality, and liveWELL points! The College of Public Health has an innate interest and drive for wellness and well-being in almost every area of health,” says Merchant. “This is a chance for us to ‘walk the talk’ together.”
