The Main Library Learning Commons project has won a Masters Award from the Master Builders of Iowa, the first time a University of Iowa project has won the award. The project was one of 100 submissions in the $5-10 million construction cost category.

Learning Commons Grand Opening Celebration will be held this afternoon, Friday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m., in the Main Library, Shambaugh Auditorium. Following the program, there will be a ribbon cutting, tours, and a reception.

The Learning Commons is a major upgrade to the UI Main Library, and the result of collaboration between University Libraries, Information Technology Services, and the Office of the Provost. Occupying much of the library’s first floor, the whole space is designed for flexibility and interaction. The 37,000-square-foot facility includes a 45-seat TILE (Transform, Interact, Learn, Engage) classroom; a consolidated service desk where staff can field academic, research, and technology questions, and a new library entrance off Madison Street.

The Masters Award recognizes the exceptional efforts of a construction team in executing the process of completing a project. Although an aesthetically pleasing and functional design is always part of a successful project, it is not a criterion for selection of this award.

The Master Builders of Iowa is the recognized leader of the construction industry in the State of Iowa, and is one of more than 100 chapters of the widely-respected Associated General Contractors of America.
