Dr. Kate Ralston, director of enrollment data analytics, has been recognized once again for her industry-leading abilities to apply research to practical enrollment management strategies.

It’s tough to be a new mother, whoever you are, whatever your income, wherever you live. But for women with chronic health conditions, it’s exceptionally difficult. Even breastfeeding can feel like an insurmountable task, full of uncertainties about the transmission of medication in breastmilk and the physical demands of holding an infant for long periods of time. This past summer, an Obermann Interdisciplinary Research Grant team, aided by Spelman Rockefeller funding, began studying breastfeeding in women with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease of the brain and spinal cord.

Allison Jaynes, professor of physics and astronomy, was selected to receive the AGU James B. Macelwane Medal, which is given annually to early career scientists in recognition of their significant contributions to Earth and space science. AGU, the world's largest Earth and space science association, annually recognizes a select number of individuals for its highest honors.

Bettina Hass retired Oct. 2 after more than four decades of dedicated service to College of Education.

Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy David Miles has been named Principal Investigator of the Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites (TRACERS) Mission following the death of Craig Kletzing in August. In 2019, a team led by Kletzing won a $115 million contract from NASA for TRACERS, the single largest externally funded research project in University of Iowa history.

The UI Department of Mathematics helped launch the Math Alliance, which has had an incredible impact expanding access to doctorate degrees to people of color across the country, including 50 minority graduates from Iowa.

Rebekah Kowal, the executive officer of the Department of Dance, was recently shortlisted for the Oscar G. Brockett Prize for Dance Research for her 2020 book, "Dancing the World Smaller: Staging Globalism in Mid-Century America."

The College of Law’s Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative recently launched an environmental law field course, with the help and support of the University of Iowa Wildlife Instruction and Leadership Development (UI WILD) team and the UI College of Education. The interdisciplinary intersession course, titled “Wildlife and Habitat Conservation Law,” ran from August 14–18 and is the first of its kind at the University of Iowa. 

The University of Iowa Libraries Annex is inconspicuously tucked between warehouses on the outskirts of Iowa City. The 60,000-square-foot facility stores about 1.8 million volumes—not including thousands of Special Collections and Archives materials—but has capacity for up to 4.8 million. It's the only facility of its kind in the state, and a critical component of the UI Libraries' strategy, streamlining management, preservation, and access to physical book collections.

The Rhetoric Society of America (RSA) has announced E Cram as the winner of its 2023 Book Award for their 2022 work titled Violent Inheritance: Sexuality, Land, Energy, and the Making of the North American West. This award is presented annually to the best publication by an RSA member published during the current academic year.
