North Liberty telescope peers into deep space

North Liberty is home to one of 10 radio telescopes in the Very Long Baseline Array, or VLBA, spread across 5,351 miles from Hawaii to the Virgin Islands, which, when used together, are 100 times more powerful than any other dedicated instrument, says UI astrophysicist Robert Mutel.

Phuong Nguyen-Hoang, assistant professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning, examined the impact of school district income tax on property tax revenue in the State of Ohio. The data show that increases in school district income tax are not associated with proportionate decreases in property taxes.

Andy Peterson, director of the UI sports concussion program, says football helmets help diffuse the impact of collisions, but don't absorb the forces of that impact; modern helmets help protect against skull fractures and traumatic head injuries that cause bleeding in the brain, he says.

Merrill to read from new poetry collections Oct. 14

Christopher Merrill, director of the University of Iowa International Writing Program, will read from his most recent books of poetry, "Boat" and "Necessities," at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. The reading also will be streamed live on the University of Iowa Writing University website.
