New engineering requirement builds a bridge to the creative arts

Beginning in fall 2015, all entering students in the UI College of Engineering will be required to take at least three semester hours of credit in the creative arts. The new requirement is the latest addition to an educational toolkit that uniquely prepares student engineers to enter the work force.

Abel awarded $4 million to study heart failure and diabetes

E. Dale Abel, director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa, has been awarded two separate grants totaling $4 million from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute to study the connection between diabetes, obesity, and heart failure.

Law professor honored for role in Iowa Civil Rights Act

This year, on the Act’s 50th anniversary, the Iowa legislature honored Iowa law Professor Arthur Bonfield for his work as principal draftsman by passing a House Resolution, which recognizes him for his role in persuading Iowa lawmakers that new, comprehensive civil rights legislation was necessary.

University of Iowa studying safety of pedestrians texting and crossing

In an effort to improve pedestrian and motorist safety, University of Iowa researchers are using a simulator called the Hank Virtual Environments Lab to learn whether pedestrians texting and walking near traffic will pay attention to warnings on their cell phones.
