University of Iowa volcanologist Ingrid Ukstins spent two weeks collecting samples from Yasur, a continuously erupting volcano on Tanna, an island in the remote South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu, to study its chemical composition and determine how the gasses it produces may be affecting people who live nearby.

The Chinese cultural concept of “moqi” (pronounced “mo-chee”) means something like unspoken cooperation or teamwork. Rather than asking direct questions, many Asian workers use it to interpret their supervisor’s intentions. Moqi may not help domestic companies, but American firms with ties to Asia might want to keep it in mind.

The University of Iowa and its Landscape Services Tree Crew were recently honored with the 2016 Tree Campus USA award at the 27th Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon in Des Moines. The UI is one of only five Tree Campus USA award winners in Iowa. This is the eighth year in a row that the UI tree crew has received this honor.
