UI art professor earns prestigious award for bicycle frame building

A bicycle named ArrowHED, designed and built by UI art professor Steve McGuire, won Best Mountain Bike, Singletrack Choice Award, at Bespoked 2017, an international show for bicycle frame-builders held in Bristol, UK.

Tom Brokaw’s ‘stuff’ in Iowa is a window into his life

Kyle Munson takes a look at the collection of papers and personal artifacts recently donated to UI Libraries by UI alumnus and legendary newsman Tom Brokaw. The Brokaw Collection represents a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his decades-long career as a respected NBC journalist, including everything from leather-bound calendars to homemade valentines.

UI honors top student employee

Rachel Bruflodt was named UI’s 2016–17 student employee of the year. The Dubuque, Iowa, native and seven other student employees, as well as nine student employee supervisors, was honored April 13 at a reception at the home of UI President J. Bruce Harreld.

The stories of more than 50 researchers, scholars, and creators from across campus are being told through a series of black-and-gold banners installed this month throughout downtown Iowa City, along the Park Road bridge, and in Old Capitol Town Center/University Capitol Centre (UCC).

UI and its Landscape Services Tree Crew honored with 2016 Tree Campus USA award

The University of Iowa and its Landscape Services Tree Crew were recently honored with the 2016 Tree Campus USA award at the 27th Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon in Des Moines. The UI is one of only five Tree Campus USA award winners in Iowa. This is the eighth year in a row that the UI tree crew has received this honor.

Tippie student to become air battle manager after graduation

After graduation, UI marketing major Alex Pagano will become an air battle manager at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. Pagano, a former wing commander in the UI’s Air Force ROTC program, says her Tippie College of Business mentors also played a key role in her success.

Old Gold: US and SUI enter World War I

When World War I broke out a century ago, the State University of Iowa became a training ground for soldiers and officers. Many members of the SUI community left to join the fight overseas, 83 of them eventually dying as a result of the conflict.

Outstanding faculty, staff, and students recognized during annual Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women

Buckley Distinguished Achievement Award for Staff and May Brodbeck Distinguished Achievement Award for Faculty were awarded to three exceptional women at the University of Iowa’s annual Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women on April 5. Nine UI students were also honored at the event.

liveWELL: Office of the Registrar staff member loses 85 pounds, starts running marathons

In 2013, Registrar Services Coordinator Sara Sullivan chose to take advantage of her University of Iowa benefits and meet with a health coach. Over the next four years, she was able to shed 85 pounds and now runs marathons. She says making that first meeting was key.
