University of Iowa psychology professor Bob McMurray says many parents stop emphasizing language as their kids leave toddlerhood. Since a preschool child’s vocabulary is a critical predictor of school preparedness and reading comprehension, it is important parents do what they can to boost it.

The University of Iowa is digitizing its fossil collection to make the more than 1 million specimens more accessible to researchers and to the public. The fossils span a vast range of Iowa's geological history, from 500 million years ago to the near-present. It's located in Trowbridge Hall.

Kevin Birmingham, an instructor at Harvard University, has received the 2016 Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism in Memory of Newton Arvin. The University of Iowa Writers' Workshop administers the award, the largest annual cash prize in English-language literary criticism, on behalf of the Truman Capote Estate.
