Analisa Iole was introduced as the new Hawkeye Marching Band drum major at the Sept. 23 football game against Penn State, becoming the first woman to hold the role since World War II.

Over the course of 20 years at the UI, Kevin Kastens has had an immense impact on the Hawkeye Marching Band and the UI School of Music: maintaining old traditions while adding new ones; finding the band a permanent practice facility; and developing software to design marching band routines.

In support of its goal to build high-impact neuroscience research, the Iowa Neuroscience Institute (INI) has awarded its first Accelerator Grants. The four funded proposals represent a mix of foundational, translational, and clinical research. They focus on neuroscience topics that are new or that add value to existing research by branching out in a new direction.

Even when University of Iowa dance faculty work with students outside the classroom, they still find teaching moments.

The Iowa Review continues to give veteran writers a platform for their work, with a new Veterans’ Writing Gallery and Veterans’ Artist Gallery on the literary magazine’s website. Each day during the week leading up to Veterans Day, the magazine plans to share past poems, stories, essays, and interviews.

Hawkeye Marching Band member Grace Schebler got a big surprise during the Iowa–Minnesota football game at Kinnick Stadium on Oct. 28. Her longtime boyfriend and former drum major for the band, Isaac Anderson, surprised her with a proposal as the band played “Hey Baby.”

University of Iowa students met with residents of Mason City’s North End at several local restaurants as part of an effort to create a comprehensive plan that will guide redevelopment of the neighborhood. The plan is part of a partnership between the city, community development agencies, and the university.

Faces of Iowa Through the Early Lens, an exhibit at the Old Capitol Museum, showcases historical photos of Iowa, including an 1854 daguerreotype showing Old Capitol, and the Iowa City photographers who captured them.

After reading the book “Hidden Figures,” UI mathematics professor Cynthia Farthing created a course to teach students about women’s contributions to science and technology, and to encourage them to advocate for gender equality in the workplace.

Installations and Interactive Performance, a course cross-listed in the University of Iowa’s theater and dance departments, attracts students from different disciplines, teaches new ways of telling stories and engaging audiences, and does it all with help from some new technology.

Students in the University of Iowa's Initiative for Sustainable Communities will hold community meetings with residents of Mason City's North End during a dinner progressing through three neighborhood restaurants.
