UI physicists win NASA funding to build space instrument

University of Iowa physicists have won funding from NASA to design, build, and test a compact instrument that can measure a wider spectrum of magnetic fields in space. NASA is funding the project, called CHIMERA, at $1,030,000 for three years.

A NASA mission conceived at the University of Iowa is exploring how energized particles interact with Earth. The missions, called, Twin Rockets to Investigate Cusp Electrodynamics, or TRICE-2, launched earlier this month. They're exploring magnetic reconnection, the explosive process that allows charged particles from space to stream into Earth’s atmosphere.
