A small fire was reported in a urology testing lab at the University of Iowa Medical Education and Research Facility Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The UI Graduate College is looking into setting up a career services office to help graduate students better understand job opportunities beyond academia.

The UI has hired David Conrad to direct the university’s engagement activities throughout Iowa, including supporting workforce training and expanding the university’s partnerships with the state’s businesses and economic development agencies.

The University of Iowa will honor December 2013 graduates during a series of commencement ceremonies and other events, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21.

The UI law school is reducing tuition and launching programs that will help students obtain degrees quicker and offer a broader range of course options: “We constantly are looking at what we are offering and teaching and what we could do different or better,” says Dean Gail Agrawal.

New in 2014—a completely overhauled gateway to the University of Iowa on the web. Expect to see a more modern, functional, and flexible home page with the start of the spring semester, a new site that introduces the UI, but also offers handy resources for students, faculty, staff, and other regular users.

Despite not having a permanent home, the University of Iowa Museum of Art set a record for attendance during the 2012-13 academic year for attendance at events, programs, and exhibitions.

Daniel Collier has discovered a feedback mechanism in cells that affects blood pressure. He has gone on to define the molecular interactions that can be used to control the problem. Collier is the 2013 Spriestersbach Prize winner in the biological and life sciences who earned his doctorate from the UI.

The state’s oldest university was not immune to the Panic of 1857. In fact, financial woes prompted the Board of Trustees to suspend operations at the University of Iowa for two academic years to allow the fledgling institution time to build up its coffers.
