Professional majors strengthen mission of liberal arts colleges

Faced with declining enrollment and rising costs, some small liberal arts colleges have added professional and vocational majors, a decision University of Iowa researchers say has strengthened rather than undermined the mission of the schools. The findings are being presented Friday at the Association for the Study of Higher Education’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

Home to one of the nation’s best hearing labs, the University of Iowa has now developed the most comprehensive genetic testing platform for deafness across the globe. Called OtoSCOPE, this technology allows researchers to pinpoint the exact genetic changes that cause people to lose their hearing.
