A packed schedule during a busy semester doesn’t always leave room for a long workout. But if you have 30 minutes between meetings, classes, or other commitments, the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC) offers plenty of ways to move your body — and you don’t even need to sweat.
“Find an activity that brings you joy and allows you to see your progress,” says Angela Charsha-Harney, associate director of fitness at Recreational Services. “You can feel the benefits of being active, even if it is only for a short period of time.”
Here are six ways you can make the most of a half hour at CRWC.
- Walk or run on the track
You don’t need special gym equipment to work out — all you need is a pair of walking or running shoes. The indoor track is an easy place to begin walking or running at a pace that feels comfortable to you.
“Just walking around the track will be a great workout for some people. Being active doesn’t require breaking a sweat,” says Charsha-Harney.
- Fit in a quick strength workout
You don’t need an elaborate plan to begin strength training. Choose a few exercises and use free weights, plate-loaded equipment, or weight machines for a short workout.

- Swim some laps
Swim at your own pace in the rec pool or competition pool. Even if you only have time for a few laps, swimming can be a great way to shake up your workout routine.
- Get your heart rate up with cardio equipment
Choose from an elliptical, treadmill, stair mill, indoor rower, or stationary bike to find a cardio workout that challenges you.
“There is no muscle more important than your heart,” says Charsha-Harney. “Whatever it is you can do to get your heart rate elevated while exercising will benefit your cardiovascular fitness.”
- Try the bouldering wall
Feeling adventurous? Spend some time at the bouldering wall. Bouldering keeps you closer to the ground and doesn’t require ropes or harnesses, making it an approachable way to try climbing and challenge yourself on different routes.
- Hit the courts
Whether you enjoy basketball, volleyball, pickleball, or futsal, the CRWC has courts of all kinds. Join a game that’s underway or grab a ball and spend some time practicing on your own. Basketballs, volleyballs, and futsal balls are available to check out at the front desk.
