The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for our area beginning late Thursday evening through noon on Friday. Windchills could drop below –35 degrees during this time, which could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Extremely cold conditions will continue through Saturday.

Because these conditions could occur for an extended period of time while classes are in session, the University of Iowa will move to virtual instruction on Friday, Jan. 23.  Instructors will hold their classes via Zoom or Teams, or in rare circumstances, cancel class and cover the material at a future date.

University offices and services will remain open and operational in accordance with the UI Policy Manual. Employees should report as scheduled and communicate with their supervisor about their specific circumstances. In all cases, we urge faculty, staff, and students to use good judgment and avoid serious risks during extreme weather conditions.

For additional information and FAQs, review the university’s Extreme Weather page and these winter weather reminders for employees.

Thank you to the many employees across the university who continue to provide critical services during extreme weather. Your dedication is appreciated.
